If you only have one day in Kyrgyzstan and want to see the real Tian Shan mountains, Ala Archa is one of the best places to visit. The national park is located about 40 kilometers from Bishkek and is considered the most popular place for walking, hiking, and exploring the nature of Kyrgyzstan.
Here you can see high snowy peaks, a mountain river, conifer forests, alpine meadows, and even glaciers. Ala Archa is suitable both for regular tourists and families, as well as for experienced climbers.
Ala Archa National Park is located south of Bishkek in the Kyrgyz Ala-Too mountain range. The drive from the city center usually takes around 1–1.5 hours depending on traffic and weather conditions.
The park starts at an altitude of around 1500 meters above sea level, so even in summer it is much cooler than in Bishkek. Entrance fee is 200 som per person.
The most convenient way is by car or with a private guide. This allows you to stop at viewpoints and spend as much time in the mountains as you want.

1. Easy walks
For most tourists, a simple walk along the river and the main trails of the park is enough. Beautiful mountain views begin almost immediately after entering the gorge.
This is a good option for families, beginner hikers, and people visiting the mountains for the first time.
You can also organize a picnic — there are special areas where you can rent a kazan or barbecue grill and cook food or shashlik.
If you do not want to cook yourself, there are cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy food and coffee with mountain views. Prices are slightly higher than in Bishkek.
For Muslim visitors, there is a small mosque near the cable car station. A larger mosque is also being built near the entrance of the park, so finding a place for prayer and ablution is not a problem.
2. Hiking and trekking
Ala Archa is one of the main hiking destinations near Bishkek. Popular routes lead:
Some hikes take only 2–3 hours, while others require good physical condition and a full day.
If you want, you can do a two-day trek: on the first day hike to the Racek hut and spend the night there, then the next morning climb Uchitel Peak at 4530 meters.
The route has a 1B difficulty category and is considered one of the highest trekking routes of this category in Kyrgyzstan. The ascent can be done on foot without special mountaineering equipment.
Since Soviet times, Ala Archa has been considered one of the main mountaineering centers in Kyrgyzstan. Both beginners and experienced climbers train here.
There are routes of different difficulty levels in the gorge, and the surrounding peaks attract mountain lovers from all over the world.
In summer you can often see tourists with tents, climbing gear, and groups going on multi-day hikes.
In winter the park turns into a real winter fairy tale. Snow covers the pine trees and rocks, and the air becomes especially fresh and clean.
One of the favorite winter activities for tourists is feeding small birds directly from your hands. The birds are so used to people that they calmly land on your palm for seeds or bread.
Winter walks here are especially atmospheric, but warm clothes and good shoes are very important.
Recently, a new cable car about 1 kilometer long was opened in Ala Archa and quickly became popular among tourists and locals. The ticket price is 600 som per person.
From the upper station at approximately 2500 meters above sea level, you can enjoy beautiful views of the mountains and the valley. It is a great place for photography and relaxing in nature without difficult hiking.
Ala Archa is also interesting for birdwatchers. Different species of mountain birds can be seen here, especially early in the morning or in quieter parts of the park.
One of the most interesting birds is the ular (Himalayan snowcock)— a large mountain bird living high in the rocky areas of the Tian Shan mountains. Sometimes hikers are lucky enough to see ulars on high mountain trails.
