The Barskoon Gorge is located on the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul, about 80-90 km from the city of Karakol and about 280 km from Bishkek. This is one of the most popular and accessible mountain gorges in the region, which can be reached by car almost all year round.
The height of the gorge starts from about 1600 meters above sea level and rises to 4000 + meters, where there are already high-altitude plateaus and passes leading to the Kumtor gold deposit.
Why is it called Barskoon? The name “Barskoon” (or Barskoon/Barskoon) has an ancient origin. There are several versions:
- The most popular is from the Turkic word “leopard” (snow leopard). It is believed that snow leopards used to live in these places.
- Another version connects the name with the ancient city of Barshan, which existed in the area during the era of the Great Silk Road.
As a result, the name can be interpreted as “the place of the leopards” or “the land of the leopard”.
Barskoon Waterfalls
The main reason why tourists come here is the cascade of picturesque waterfalls. There are several of them, but three are considered the most famous:
- Tears of the Leopard waterfall
- Height: approximately 20-25 meters
- One of the most accessible waterfalls
- The name is associated with the legend of the wounded leopard
- Aksakala Beard waterfall
- Height: about 30 meters
- Streams of water resemble the long gray beard of an old man
- Very beautiful in winter — partially freezes
- Waterfall “Manas Bowl”
- Height: about 10-15 meters
- Water falls into a stone bowl
- Associated with the epic “Manas”
Features of the gorge
Barskoon is unique in that it combines different natural areas:
- Green forests and alpine meadows
- Snowy peaks even in summer
- Stormy mountain rivers
- Glaciers and high-altitude plateaus
Clearings bloom here in spring and early summer, golden slopes in autumn, and waterfalls turn into ice walls in winter.
